Sabine Ulibarrí founded the University of New Mexico Andean Center in Quito, Ecuador in 1968 and coordinated the program for one year.
Ulibarrí became the President of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in 1969, and served as executive council member from 1970 to 1975.

Sabine Ulibarrí, professor emeritus in the Spanish and Portuguese Department, died Saturday, Jan. 4, at age 83.
An institution in the Modern Languages Department, Ulibarrí was also poet, author, scholar and lecturer.
Among his many awards is the Regents Meritorious Service Medal and the UNM Distinguished Alumni Award.

I wanted to understand why linguistic attitudes existed, how they evolved, and why my abuelitos native language was menospreciado, stigmatized?
Those experiences also prepared me to be Coordinator of the Sabine Ulibarrí Spanish as a Heritage Language Program (SHL), to better understand the students who had similar experiences, and to create a program which would build confianza and orgullo rather than eradicate what the students had learned from their parents and grandparents.
In addition, the graduate and undergraduate students who enroll in my Spanish of the Southwest, or Language, Gender and Race classes are required to conduct research on various sociolinguistic themes, i.e., the politics of language, language attitudes, and language maintenance / language shift.
