Topic: Sabinus

  Julius Sabinus
Sabinus for his part, naturally a conceited man, was further inflamed by bogus pretensions to high birth.
Sabinus' affairs were not such as to prevent him from getting away and making good his escape to a foreign country, except that he had married a most remarkable wife.
When Sabinus heard this, being afraid that she would make away with herself completely, he ordered Martial to report to her secretly that he was alive and in hiding, and begged her to continue in her mourning a little while longer and to neglect nothing that would make her simulation convincing.

Sabinus gives Homer as an example, who relates that the army of the Greeks purchased wine with copper, iron, and slaves, as follows: "The long haired Greeks here purchased wine, some of them with copper, others with glittering iron, others with hides, others again with cattle, and still others with slaves."
Sabinus and Cassius hold that the purchase became complete when the articles were counted, measured, or weighed; because the sale is considered to have been made under the condition that you should measure them in individual vessels, or weigh them pound by pound, or count them one by one.
Sabinus says that the vendor can reject the better terms offered, and adhere to the first proposal, if he considers it preferable, and we have adopted this rule.

Now Sabinus was aftrighted, both at their multitude, and at their courage, and sent messengers to Varus continually, and besought him to come to his succor quickly; for that if he delayed, his legion would be cut to pieces.
Rufus also, and Gratus, their captains, did the same, (Gratus having the foot of the king's party under him, and Rufus the horse,) each of whom, even without the forces under them, were of great weight, on account of their strength and wisdom, which turn the scales in war.

Saint Sabinus before the Governor of Tuscany (?)
The panel is probably part of the predella of Lorenzetti's 'Birth of the Virgin' of 1342, painted for the altar of Saint Sabinus in Siena Cathedral (now in the Museo dell' Opera del Duomo, Siena).
Pietro Lorenzetti's altarpiece was flanked by figures of Saints Sabinus and Bartholomew and the National Gallery painting was presumably below the first.
It apparently illustrates a rare episode showing Venustanius, the Roman Governor of Tuscany, trying to persuade Saints Sabinus, Marcellus and Exuperantius to worship a pagan statue, here apparently Venus since she is shown holding a golden ball representing the apple Paris gave to her.
