For much of the mid-'80s, the Beastie Boys were considered as macho clowns, and while their ambitious, Dust Brothers-produced second album Paul's Boutique dismissed that theory, it was ignored by both the public and the press at the time.
Def Jam officially signed the Beastie Boys in 1985, and that year they had a hit single from the soundtrack to Krush Groove with "She's on It," a rap track that sampled AC/DC's "Back in Black" and suggested the approach of the group's forthcoming debut album.
The Beasties' Grand Royal magazine was also launched that year.Over the next few years, the Beasties remained quiet as they concentrated on political causes and their record label.

Supervised by Beasties member and DVD nut Adam "MCA" Yauch, the anthology represents the future of music-video compilations, which are usually disposable visual wallpaper packaged without much of the inventiveness or wit that Yauch and the Criterion producers infused into this retrospective.
The goofy cartoon violence in "Sabotage" is an example of why the band's videos are so enjoyable: while most other artists make videos as overly glossy love letters to themselves, the Beasties don't take themselves too seriously.

He's perhaps best known as one-third of the radical, outlandish rap coalition called the Beastie Boys, the groundbreakers in free associative wordplay who once lyrically hog-tied, for example, Judaism, Harry Truman, J. Salinger, and Mario Andretti while proposing a sequel to Putney Swope.
