Early Music - Sackbutt, a 14th C ancestor of the modern trombone
During the 17th Century, a consort of sackbutts would normally include an alto, tenor and bass.
In England, King Henry VIII had his own consort of ten sackbutts at court, and by the early 1600s England was considered to be a centre of excellence in sackbutt playing.

 Amazon.com: Sackbutt: Music: Horace X
Horace X takes it to the other end of the spectrum, pushing the goof factor to 10, painting band members in day-glo paint and putting on rambunctious live show.
Live instrumentation keeps the melting pot a human one, and while the music is distinctly modern, there is never a doubt that the music is created with real musicianship.
Sackbutt is their first album with vocalists Simon Twitchin and Terminator Bones, which may be why it's the only one with an American release so far--instrumental albums, no matter how rockin', probably just wouldn't sell very well here.

In art music in general, the trombone is not an instrument associated with greatness
The sackbutt, or early trombone, played an important role in the development of instrumental music of the early Baroque and late Renaissance and was considered by many to be the greatest and most versatile of winds.
Even the origin of its English name, the sackbut (or sackbutt, shagbut, sagbut, shagbosh, with many variations thereon), at least its original meaning, is shrouded in mystery.

It's not like the elements in Horace X's dance rock stew are anything that unusual; funk polyrhythms, folk fiddling, jazz fusion sax, raga vocals and electronic enhancements abound all over the music world.
This is dance music, plain and simple; "Bad Lies," "Dreams—Half Empty" and "Nuff Megabyte" should get your feet moving, arms flailing and blood pumping in no time at all.

Theatrum Instrumentorum - Woodcuts   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The sackbutt (which was spelled in many fashions over its lifetime) still exists in the modern Trombone, albeit with a wider bore and a flare on the bell that dwarfs even the wide bells in Praetorius' woodcuts.
Praetorius makes mention of a sackbutt which was the same length as the bass sackbutt, but produced notes an octave lower, indicating the possibility that four slide-tubes were used instead of the normal two, with the bore making two full loops.
Because the lower sizes of shawms were not terribly powerful, as the higher pitched instruments were, it was common to use dulcians or sackbutts to provide the bass and tenor voices.

Though the earliest examples of this instrument date to a century later (circa 1550), direct references to musicians and their instruments, and surviving artwork, both establish the existence of the saxbutt circa 1450.
The contrabass trombone, though used primarily to play and perform rare parts scored for it, can be effectively used as a substitute for tuba in classical music and period jazz, and bass saxophone in period and modern jazz.
The exact etymology and meaning of the term “sackbutt” and it variations is not certain, but is thought to be a derivation of the Old French term, sacquer, “to draw out.” The word “trombone” has meant variously trumpet or large trumpet in German and Italian.
