After the Embargo Act of 1807, the community was a base of anti-smuggling operations between the USA and Canada.
American military officer and explorer Zebulon Pike was killed in 1813 while taking part in the military operations in Ontario and is buried in the village.

The battle was a decisive American victory in which a combined force of American militia, regulars and sailors repulsed a British invasion against Sackett's Harbor, New York, the main shipbuilding naval base on Lake Ontario.
The British made a flanking maneuver and marched through the town of Sackets Harbor and past the naval yard.
