An Ambassador Theater Group Prods., Incidental Colman Tod, PW Prods., Matthew Mitchell, Sadler's Wells presentation, in association with HoriPro, of a New Adventures production of a ballet in two acts, with music by Tchaikovsky, scenario by Matthew Bourne and Martin Duncan.
First seen a decade ago, director-choreographer Bourne's gleeful upending of the traditional "Nutcracker" can now be viewed in hindsight as fully anticipatory of the career-making "Swan Lake" and "Cinderella" that at the time were still to come.
A holiday mainstay gains an exclamation point -- and more -- in "Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker!," a jokey, sometimes laugh-out-loud funny two-act romp that bears roughly the same relationship to the time-honored Tchaikovsky ballet as, say, Baz LuhrmannBaz Luhrmann's "Romeo and Juliet" bore to its Shakespearean source.
