Sado (佐渡市, -shi) is a city located on Sado Island (佐渡島 or 佐渡ヶ島, both Sadogashima) in the Chubu region of Niigata Prefecture, Japan.
Sado is the sixth largest area island in Japan following Okinawa Island, excluding the Northern Territories.
Sado experienced an economic boom during the Edo era when gold was found at Aikawa.

On October 23, 2004, the Chuetsu Earthquake struck Niigata Prefecture, causing shaking measured at Shindo 6+ at Ojiya.
Niigata prefecture stretches about 240 km along the Sea of Japan from southwest to north east, with a coastal plain between the mountains and the sea.
On March 1, 2004, the city of Ryotsu and the towns of Aikawa, Hamochi, Hatano, Kanai, Mano, Ogi and Sawata and the villages of Akadomari and Niibo from Sado District merged to form the city of Sado.
