The Safari Rally was this year the second round of the gr A World Championship and all the teams competing in the manufacturers championship shipped their equipment to Kenya.
The rally was preceded by very heavy rains so the course was wet and muddy and some stages were in so bad a shape that they had to be cancelled.
The Safari is, however, still a great adventure of 3000 kilometres where preserving the car is as important as driving fast.

Farewell to the Safari rally - Rally - Automotive Forums .com- A Message Board for Every Make and Model
One the one hamd, the rally was a true test of machinery (and drivers as well), on the other hand - seemed quite boring to me. As in too long.
IMO it's a shame to see it go as it seemed to be the last real test of endurance for the cars and drivers, even though the 2002 season saw it restructured into just another 3-day sprint event.
Apparently Carlos Sainz was glad to see it go on safety grounds, but a large number of drivers are expressing their regrets at seeing one of the last 'historic' events go.
