  THE POST: Coalition works for safe schools
According to the Safe Community and Schools Coalition fact sheet, the U.S. Department of Justice reported 45 percent of gay men and 20 percent of lesbians have reported being harassed or attacked in high school because they were perceived to be gay or lesbian.
The coalition also is in the process of researching and developing policies that would protect GLBT students, parents and staff from harassment, violence and discrimination, said Jeanine Woodruff, coalition member on the policy making committee.
The coalition is preparing to assist school boards throughout Athens County with the development of anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies.

The Safe Place to Learn study proves the effectiveness of several specific steps schools can take including posting and enforcing anti-harassment policies that specifically include sexual orientation and gender identity, training teachers and staff to intervene when slurs are used, and supporting efforts to establish Gay Straight Alliance clubs on campus.
Students who know of a school policy specifically prohibiting harassment based on sexual orientation are 19% less likely to be harassed based on sexual orientation and 25% more likely to feel safe at school.
The California Safe Schools Coalition is a statewide network of experts and advocates working to implement the California Student Safety and Violence Prevention Act, which became law on January 1, 2000.

It is apparent that poor school performance, low self-esteem and a high suicide rate among gay and lesbian students is closely related to the threats and physical abuse to which they are commonly subjected.
School One has a non-discrimination policy for race, gender, creed, sexual orientation, etc. I chose that because if someone was to call me a 'faggot' there, I could bring him up on community charges and have fines brought up against him.
It is clear that schools need to begin or continue dialogue on this issue in their own community or school district.

A group of us met with the superintendent of schools, and school board president in May. We were told that purchasing the homosexual affirming books was necessary to help make schools safe for all children, and to recognize and respect the diversity of the District's families.
School officials flatly reject the proposal that zero-tolerance for all name-calling and bullying behavior be enforced without teaching affirmation and acceptance of homosexuality.
Schools do not require notification of parents when homosexuality is discussed (outside of the context of the F.L.A.S.H. program), nor are schools required to offer an "opt out" when such instruction is given.

In this workshop participants were introduced to the concept of logic models as visual guides designed to give structure and clarity to program goals and outcomes.
Participants were informed of the benefits of a logic model and its ability to link short term to long-term outcomes, and were provided with examples of how a logic model can be used in their own programs.

The right is part of a new policy adopted by the school district and introduced by California Safe Schools Coalition, an organization committed to ensuring that all students, teachers, staff and community members who live near these school sites are in a safe, toxic-free environment.
Because of the new policy, parents are given a list of pesticide products at the beginning of the school year that have been approved for use within the Los Angeles Unified School District sites.
Parents who wish advance notification of each pesticide application at their child's school will receive notification by completing the "Right to Know" form and sending it to the school principal.
