  Howstuffworks "How Safecracking Works"
The most popular method of safecracking is to simply steal the entire safe and move it to a location where the safecracker has the time and tools to take the safe apart and remove its contents.
The professional safecracker is well researched in both the type of safe he is cracking and the type of person who is using it.
The safecracker must also possess a clear understanding of the mechanical actions of locks in the various forms they take and/or some knowledge of the characteristics of the safe owner.

LUX.ET.UMBRA: Safecracking for the Computer Scientist
It looks like Matt Blaze (the University of Pennsylvania CS professor best known for finding security flaws in the NSA Clipper Chip and in master keyed locks) is still causing trouble in physical security circles.
There's a draft paper (dated December '04) on his web site entitled Safecracking for the Computer Scientist, which is a pretty in-depth look at what computer security can learn from safes (and vaults).
The interesting thing is that it describes in detail the different ways that safes are cracked, probably revealing techniques that locksmiths would rather you didn't know about (there's a lot of security-by-obscurity there).

Schneier on Security: Safes and Safecracking
Posted by: Zwack at December 9, 2004 12:40 PM I recall reading, a couple of years ago, an interview with a legitimate safecracker in some men's magazine.
What stuck with me from the article was mention of a small book that the locksmith had given him, and that had set him on his career path.
He described it as a straight-forward guide to safecracking for locksmiths, titled "The Art of Manipulation." What references I've dug up indicate that it's a 1950's or 1960's-era publication, long since out of print.
