Earlier ḥavurot might have existed in Safed, such as the "Companions Hearkening to the Voice of the Lord" which is mentioned by R. Moses ben Joseph Trani (the Mabit, 1500- 1580) in the preface to his book Iggeret Derekh haShem, but it is not clear if, indeed, it was a ḥavurah in that same sense.
All these were translated into English by Lawrence Fine and may be found in his book Safed Spirituality (New York: Paulist Press, 1984).
Rabbi Moses included a considerable amount of kabbalistic material in this book, most of it quotations from the Zohar, and he explains this in the preface by citing the need to explicate the reasons for the commandments (ta'amei ha-mitzvot), and to make the practices rooted in the kabbahstic worldview known to the general Jewish public.

Like other revisionist historians, Abbasi devotes his introduction to an analysis of the “old” or “official” historiography which to a great degree is irrelevant to the subject of his study; he himself notes that most of the ‘new historians’ tend to belittle the importance of local subjects.
Abbasi’s attempt to correct the formula of ‘a few against many’ that is prevalent in the consciousness of Jews who lived through that period preserves the unbalanced presentation through an exaggeration of Arab weakness.
