Safeguard (nuke) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Stanley R. Mickelson Safeguard complex in Nekoma, North Dakota, with the separate long-range detection radar located further north at Concrete, North Dakota, was the only operational anti-ballistic missile system ever deployed by the United States.
The complex was deactivated in 1976 after being operational for less than four months.
The international safeguards system is a system of treaties and inpections administered and conducted by the IAEA to hinder nuclear weapons proliferation.

IAEA too decide in Nov if S. Korea violated nuke safeguard accord
The official, who asked not to be named, said the South Korean government was cooperative in IAEA inspections at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, where the unsanctioned experiment was conducted.
In such a case, the board would likely designate the unsanctioned experiment as a violation of the safeguard agreement and report it to the UN Security Council without invoking sanctions, he said.
The research institute`s president, Chang In Soon, said earlier that 0.2 gram of enriched uranium was produced in the experiment to separate materials using a laser.

Report: Crude Nuke Terrorism a Threat   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The threat of terrorists setting off a crude nuclear bomb in a major city is real and should be urgently addressed, concludes a private report issued Wednesday on controlling nuclear materials.
The report, part of a project at Harvard University, is only the latest in a string of studies on global efforts to keep nuclear materials and warheads out of the hands of terrorists or rogue states.
Matthew Bunn, one of its authors, says an equally daunting task is to develop greater safeguards at research reactors around the world where, often, only minimal security protects reactor fuel and other material.

VIENNA - The UN's nuclear watchdog agency is to debate Wednesday how to react to Iranian nuclear safeguard violations amid US claims that Tehran is secretly developing atomic weapons, a spokesman said.
International Atomic Energy Agency spokesman Mark Gwozdecky said the IAEA 35-nation Board of Governors would discuss Iran's nuclear program Wednesday but might not reach a decision on "issuing a resolution of concern or merely a statement" from director general Mohamed ElBaradei until Thursday or Friday.
A western diplomat said the United States, which like Iran is on the IAEA governors' board, "has a mandate to get a strong resolution" against Iranian failures to comply with nuclear safeguards agreements outlined in a report ElBaradei has already presented to the IAEA.

Development of Safeguard was approved in 1969, and on October 1, 1975, the system was made operational.
Relatively inexpensive by today's standards, Safeguard's Sprint and Spartan missiles were successfully tested, scoring 58 intercepts out of 70 attempted.
NMD relies on sophisticated computer technology to directly strike one missile payload with another - a task called 'kinetic kill,' which is comparable to stopping a bullet by shooting another bullet at it.

The problem with using nukes as your 'bullet', is that they just need to shoot a bunch of dummy rockets, and you end up nuking people.
Both the Sprint and Spartan were part of the Safeguard system, deployed around Grand Forks AFB in Minot, North Dakota, in 1973.
The thinking behind Safeguard's deployment location was that defense of the US's counterstrike capability would be a better means of deterring attack, because it would make the Soviets unsure of whether a preemptive strike could successfully mitigate American counterstrike capability.
