They killed all the men of the Banu Nadir and divided the women among themselves; Muhammad chose for himself Safiyya bint Huyayy, daughter of the Banu Nadir chief.
Later he was to marry more wives, to make for a total of eleven, of whom nine or ten were living at the time of his death.
They question the circumstances of some of his marriages, such as those to Zaynab bint Jahsh, his adopted son's ex-wife, and to Aisha, who according to hadith was nine years old when the marriage was consummated.

According to the tale widely accepted by both Shias and Sunnis, Muhammad's wife Zainab bint Jahsh was given a skin filled with honey, which she shared with her husband.
He was fond of sweets and stayed overlong with Zainab bint Jash; at least in the opinion of Aisha and her co-wife Hafsa.
One book, Politics, Gender, and the Islamic Past: the Legacy of A'isha bint Abi Bakr, by D.A. Spellberg, Columbia University Press, 1994, argues that Aisha's youth was deliberately emphasized by scholars who supported the Abbasid caliphate and rejected Shi'a claims for the descendents of Ali ibn Abi Talib.

Let us see how Aisha herself described this episode: Aisha said: "Safiyya, the wife of the Prophet (PBUH&HF), sent a dish she had made for him when he was with me. When I saw the maidservant, I trembled with rage and fury, and I took the bowl and hurled it away.
No doubt her speech: "Enough for you about Safiyya is such and such" and the response of the Prophet of Allah (PBUH&HF) "You have uttered words which, if they were mixed with the waters of the sea, would color it" shows what Aisha had said regarding Safiyya was a grave thing and of immense concern.
As far as the second woman is concerned, i.e., Asma Bint al-Nu'man; her naive disposition became apparent when Aisha's tricks captured her, and the first words that she greeted the Prophet of Allah (PBUH&HF) with, when he stretched out his hand to her were: "I seek refuge in Allah from you".

Safiyya bint Huyayy the Prophet's wife said: The Prophet came in to see me and in front of me there were four thousand date-stones with which I was making tasbih [counting subhan Allah].
It is also related from the Prophet's freedman, Abu Safiyya, that a mat would be spread for him and a basket made of palm leaves brought which was filled with pebbles with which he would make tasbih until mid-day.
But the two other hadiths [of Sa`d ibn Abi Waqqas and Safiyya bint Huyayy] indicate the permissibility of counting tasbih with date-stones and pebbles, and similarly with dhikr-beads because there is no distinguishing factor between them in the Prophet's stipulation to the two women concerning it, and no disapproval of it.
