Sagami Bay, Japan; Description   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Sagami Bay is located in about the center of Japan proper, bounded by the Miura Peninsula on the east and by the northern half of the Izu Peninsula on the west.
To the south the bay opens far out into the ocean; it is bordered on the north by the hills ranging from Odawara and Oiso to Kamakura and Hayama, of the so-called "River of Shonan."
The depth of the bay varies from the tidal line to 700 meters, and a branch stream of the warm "Kuroshiro" (Black Current) which flows eastward between Oshima Island and the south of the Izu Peninsula, comes into the bay during certain season of the year.

Sagami Bay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sagami Bay (相模湾, Sagami-wan), also known as the Sagami Gulf or Sagami Sea, lies south of Kanagawa Prefecture in Honshū, central Japan, with the Miura Peninsula to its east and the Izu Peninsula to its west.
A branch of the warm Kuroshio (Black Current) warms the bay, allowing it to host marine organisms typical of more southerly regions and giving a mild climate to the land bordering the bay.
In 2004 soil samples from the bay were found to contain radioactive contamination from the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests that took place from 1946 to 1958 [1].

Wind-induced Kuroshio warm water intrusion into Sagami Bay
The mechanisms of the periodic Kuroshio warm water intrusion (KWWI) into Sagami Bay through the Oshima West Channel (OWC) and the fluctuation of the current field in the bay were investigated using high-frequency oceanic radar observation data, satellite imagery, and meteorological data.
The distances of the Kuroshio front movements were consistent with the internal radius of the deformation estimated from conductivity-temperature-depth data collected off the IP, suggesting that the Kuroshio front movement was induced by the onshore-offshore surface Ekman transport associated with the wind velocity field regime shift corresponding to the passage of cyclones.
In addition, examination of the vorticity dynamics in the northern part of the bay based on radar-derived surface current data indicated that the cyclonic circulation generated in the bay was enhanced due to the transport of the positive relative vorticity by the KWWI plus the horizontal convergence accompanied by the stretching of the vorticity.

The larval anchovy and their predatory fish were simultaneously captured by a trawl in Sagami Bay during October to November 2000.
The growth rates analyzed by otolith microstructure were compared between the larvae from the stomach contents of the predators (prey larvae) and those from the population of origin (surviving larvae).
We propose the Œgrowth-selective predation¹ hypothesis (mechanism), which is theoretically independent of and synergistic with the existing hypotheses based on size and time under the general Œgrowth-mortality¹ concept for the survival process during the early life history of marine pelagic fish.

On the other hand, sediments from Sagami Bay (S2 and S3) were closely related to each other (13.9% divergence), but quinone profiling of Nankai Trough sediment (S5) was not similar to those of Sagami Bay.
Thus, we found that the phylogenetic structures in S2, S3, and S5 were similar, but the relative abundance and physiological condition of the microbial populations was apparently different between Sagami Bay (S2 and S3) and Nankai Trough (S5).
