Sagamore Bridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The bridge, along with its sibling, the Bourne Bridge, was constructed beginning in 1933 by the Public Works Administration for the United States Army Corps of Engineers, which operates both the bridges and the canal.
The design of the Sagamore and Bourne bridges was later copied in miniature for the John Greenleaf Whittier bridge that connects Interstate 95 from Newburyport to Amesbury on Massachusetts' North Shore.
The bridge replaces an earlier, 1912 bridge, which was built as a drawbridge before the canal was widened.

Sagamore Bridge plan sidelined - The Boston Globe
Representative Joseph Wagner, a Chicopee Democrat who is House chairman of the transportation committee, said his concern was that the project wouldn't improve traffic flow enough to justify the cost and that the cost was likely to balloon, possibly to $70 million.
Cogliano conceded that there are no planned widenings or interchange improvements on either side of the flyover, and that the four-lane, 1930s-era Sagamore Bridge, under the jurisdiction of the Army Corps of Engineers, cannot be widened.
Romney singled out the Sagamore Rotary as a highway bottleneck that needed to be addressed immediately, and said the flyover would not only benefit seasonal residents but help Cape Cod tourism generally.

 Sagamore Bridge (US 6)
The Sagamore Bridge has a 616-foot-main span over the canal like the Bourne Bridge, but from abutment to abutment, the bridge is 976 feet shorter than its identical twin two and one-half miles to the west.
However, the original Sagamore Bridge was built in advance of the canal's opening by two years as the span had to be built before the canal was dug.
Like the Bourne Bridge, its twin two and one-half miles to the west, the Sagamore Bridge was built as a steel-arch span providing 616 feet of clearance between piers and a 135-foot vertical clearance.

The vertical lift railroad bridge, with a 544 foot horizontal span, was constructed close to the western end of the land cut, near the site of the old bridge.
The Massachusetts governor lavished praise on the entire Canal project, stating: "The construction of these beautiful bridges and the expenditure of nearly $40,000,000 for the development of this inland waterway is bound to contribute to the happiness and well being of the people of Massachusetts." At the Sagamore Bridge, Mrs.

Associated Construction Publications - Sagamore Traffic Unclogged
The new bridge, completed in 1935, was part of an ambitious effort to widen the Cape Cod Canal and replace the Buzzards Bay Railroad Bridge and two highway bridges with modern spans.
It was a bascule bridge with a single 160-foot span that pivoted on the north foundation.
Since it was impractical to relocate the existing railroad bridge, and the gradual grades required for locomotives precluded the construction of a high-level railroad bridge, the corps specified a vertical-lift bridge design.

As is, the rotary approach to the bridge is one of "the major traffic hazards in Southeastern Massachusetts," said Thomas Cahir, assistant secretary of the Executive Office of Transportation and Construction.

State Environmental Affairs Secretary Ellen Roy Herzfelder gave her final approval yesterday of the $35 million project, which was opposed by environmentalists and some residents who worried that easier access to the Cape would increase development.

The rotary improvement project will eliminate the existing rotary, connect Route 3 directly to the Sagamore Bridge and reroute the Scenic Highway and other local roadways.  The Sagamore rotary was built in the 1930s to handle 40,000 cars a day.  Currently, up to 90,000 cars use the rotary daily.
The Sagamore rotary is one of the most dangerous traffic locations in the state, with accidents occurring at a rate five times the statewide average.  Between 1999 and 2001, there were 269 accidents at the rotary.
The elimination of the Sagamore Rotary will greatly improve access to Cape Cod and result in a dramatic improvement in local access for the approximately 4,000 residents of the Sagamore Beach area.  The project will also result in a significant reduction in idling traffic and a 17 percent reduction in auto emissions.
