Saginaw Bay Lighthouse, established in 1841, was the first lighthouse in what is now known the as the Bay City, Michigan area (more specifically, Bangor Township of Bay County) and was located on Saginaw Bay just west of the mouth of the Saginaw River.
The Saginaw River Range Station was comprised of the keeper's dwelling, the Saginaw River Range Rear Range Light (the tower for the Rear Range Light was attached to the northwest corner of the keeper's dwelling), and the no longer existing Saginaw River Range Front Range Light.
The Saginaw River Marine Historical Society (SRMHS) is the organization involved with the preservation of the Saginaw River Rear Range Lighthouse in cooperation with the owner of the building, The Dow Chemical Company.

Saginaw is a community truly situated at the center of Michigan and all of its attractions.
The name Saginaw is derived from an Ojibway term "O-Sag-e-non" or "Sag-in-a-we" that means "to flow out" and probably refers to the outflow of the Saginaw River into the Saginaw Bay.
Due to infusions of capital by Jesse Hoyt of New York, residents flourished on the eastern side of the Saginaw River as well and East Saginaw was incorporated as a village in 1854.

 Seeing The Light - Saginaw River Rear Range Light
While the Rear Range's location on land some distance from the river bank eliminated the effects of such wave action on the structure itself, the banks of the channel from the river to the Light was beginning to deteriorate and threatened to undermine the structure's foundation.
The Saginaw River Rear Range Lighthouse is located in on private Dow Chemical property in Bangor Township on the west bank of the Saginaw River (near where the river meets the Saginaw Bay) just north of Bay City, Michigan.
While the Saginaw River Marine Historical Society is working with Dow Chemical to restore the structure, access to the light is presently restricted to members of the Society at this time.

Whether life at the Saginaw Bay Light was particularly intolerable or whether poor decisions were made in the appointment of its keepers is unrecorded, however by 1866 seven keepers had been assigned to station, with all of them resigning from lighthouse service with the exception of Malden's transfer to Thunder Bay.
With the establishment of the new Saginaw River Range Lights, the tower of the old Saginaw Bay Light no longer served any purpose and was demolished in order to prevent any confusion to mariners entering the river.
While the Saginaw Bay Light was gone for ever, the old dwelling was left standing, likely to be used as a dwelling for an Assistant Keeper should one be deemed necessary to tend the Front Range at some time in the future.

The transport of these contaminants into Saginaw Bay is of concern, and the Michigan DNR has conducted widespread sampling in the Bay to determine contaminant concentrations in the sediments and fish.
For the purpose of this risk assessment, it was assumed that fish collected from the mouth of the river accumulated most of their contaminant burden from the lower Saginaw River.
This assessment focused on two pathways by which residents of the lower Saginaw River could be exposed to sediment-derived contaminants: 1) consumption of contaminated fish (i.e., walleye or carp), and 2) consumption of contaminated waterfowl (i.e., mallards and gadwalls).
