Adams County Farm Service Agency executive director John Kissick retired, effective Friday, after 35 years of service and more than 31 years in the Quincy office.
His first official assignment came in Saguache County in Colorado, an area with a lot of truck farmers but very few other agricultural producers.
Kissick will miss working with them along with the comradeship with his coworkers in the Quincy office, his fellow county executive directors, the FSA committee and the U.S. Department of Agriculture "family" housed together just down the street from the University of Illinois Extension and Adams County Farm Bureau.

 The Saguache County Museum
The early history of Saguache is spiced with the story of Alferd E. Packer, who was charged in 1874 with murdering, robbing and eating portions of his five prospecting companions.
Staffers are prepared to relate the puzzling story of this man, who was at first condemned to death, escaped, recaptured and given the sentence of 40 years for voluntary manslaughter.
It was opened to the public as part of the Saguache County Museum in May, 1997.

    The Saguache area was homesteaded in 1866.  Nathan Russell and others settled the bottomlands of Saguache Creek.  Existing arroyos were used to irrigate crops, the primary crop being wheat.  Later in the 19th century, canals were formally dug to irrigate.
    Otto Mears moved to Saguache in 1866 and began raising wheat.  Other settlers, mostly Spanish-speaking, Anglo, and of northern European origin, soon followed.  Mears was the county treasurer for many years and influenced the development of other counties in Colorado, including Lake County, Hinsdale County, and Conejos County.
    John Lawrence was another pioneer who arrived in Saguache County in 1867.  He established the Saguache Cemetery and was a state representative, county assessor, county judge, and school board member.  He was known as the "Father of Saguache".
