  ADW: Saguinus oedipus: Information
Cotton-top tamarins are distinguished from other members of the genus Saguinus by possessing a crest of long whitish hair from the forehead to the nape flowing over the shoulders.
Saguinus oedipus have an interesting characteristic which consists of food associated calls that are correlated with food preferences.
The main problems contributing to the cotton-top tamarin's status as endangered is the clearing of their forest habitat and population depletion from animal trade.

Digimorph - Saguinus oedipus (cotton-top tamarin)
Saguinus oedipus, the cottontop tamarin, is a South American or New World monkey.
The research for which these CT data were collected indicates that this primitive anthropoid cranial morphology included considerable cranial pneumatization via the paranasal sinuses.
Saguinus oedipus is a member of the Callitrichinae, a group of small platyrrhines that are distinctive in having claw-like bilaterally compressed finger nails.

Emperor Tamarin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
When emperor tamarins were first discovered at the begining of this century, their long moustaches were believed to resemble the moustache of a German Emperor from the 19th century.
Bearded emperor tamarins are known scientifically as Saguinus imperator subgrisescens.
This latter type of emperor tamarin is endangered mainly due to the destruction of its environment by deforestation.

The ovaries of 15 tamarins (Saguinus sp.) between 2 and 16 yr of age were collected at necropsy and examined for evidence of age-related differences.
As expected, there was a marked decline in the number of primary follicles with advancing age.
Luteal-like masses were found in all ovaries examined and their size and appearance was unrelated to age.
