 Sahabzada Yaqub Khan
General Yaqub’s apparent disregard for the sensitivities of normal run of mill officers has to be understood in relation to the professional and cultural excellence that he desired to see around him.
Many of Yaqub’s colleagues in the General Staff who preferred to remain limited to Military Training Pamphlet No 8 were visibly disturbed at this onslaught of military intellectualism and did everything to put the teacher down.
Yaqub Khan, therefore, insisted in the name of military necessity that his task should not made be impossible by deliberately alienating the people of East Pakistan.

The last time Sahabzada Yaqub visited New York in July, 2004 he came over for drinks and pizza--he is a man of sophisticated tastes who still enjoys simple things--and more than anything else, that day he repeatedly expressed his shock and dismay at the behavior of U.S. soldiers at Abu Ghraib.

He was working closely with foreign minister Sahabzada Yaqub Khan in 1984 when General Zia thought that he would be the right person to anoint the wheels of his new policy of detente with India.
Dr Khan’s defence attaché one day reported to him that he had it on the assurance of an A-One (undeniable) secret source that she was about to break off relations perhaps as a prelude to doing something more serious on the border.
Dr Khan doesn’t agree with the ‘Kashmir-first’ policy pursued over the years by Pakistan, but points out that it had actually begun with Mrs Gandhi in 1972, who wanted to solve the Kashmir problem ‘once and for all’; and that it was Zulfikar Ali Bhutto who wanted ‘progress on other fronts first’.
