  Sahitya Academy Awards - Books & Authors
The Sahitya Akademi was formally inaugurated by the Government of India on 12 March 1954.
Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters, is the central institution for literary dialogue, publication- and promotion in the country and the only institution that undertakes literary activities in twenty-two Indian languages, including English.
Sahitya Akademi is aware of cultural and linguistic differences and does not believe in forced standardisation of culture through a bulldozing of levels and attitudes.

 K. Satchidanandan, a poet in 'unpoetic' times
After an illustrious tenure as secretary of the Sahitya Akademi here, K. Satchidanandan is set to bid adieu to the institution he has served for over 13 years.
At the Sahitya Akademi, India's apex body for literature, it has been quite a balancing act for him, continuously juggling the poet in him and the almost-bureaucratic secretarial post.
Satchidanandan's association with the Sahitya Akademi, Delhi, began in 1992 as an editor.

An interesting detail which appeared during the Sahitya Akademi election campaign was that Mahashweta Devi did not seem to know, or at least think, that literary critics had anything to do with literature or whether an eminent literary critic was recognised as a man or woman of literature.
All I would say is that, in the interest of Indian literature and the Sahitya Akdemi, the defeated need to forget their defeat and stop licking their wounds; the victors should stop gloating over their victory and spare the defeated their contempt and wrath.

While the Akademi is said to have cited “financial crunch” as the reason for turning down the demand, the home ministry’s stand on the issue paints a very “uncertain future” on the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule.
Sources said the Khasi language was set aside as it does not fulfil “some of the criteria” like the number of people speaking the language being “too few” and the size of the population speaking the language in Meghalaya being relatively small.
Lamare, a Sahitya Akademi member in Shillong and a member of the Khasi Authors’ Society, was not available for comments.

While giving some statistics, Shri Faleiro quotes the President of the Sahitya Akademi and says that, “the print order for award-winning Konkani literature in Devanagari was about 300 copies, almost 100 were distributed free of charge and the rest remain in the godowns of the Akademi.” This is totally false and baseless.
Because, the award-winning books are not printed or published by the Sahitya Akademi and therefore the question of “200 out of 300 copies” remaining in the godowns of the Sahitya Akademi does not arise at all.
The Sahitya Akademi, the National Book Trust and other similar agencies, publish the books in Sindhi written in Perso-Arabic only, the script which is used for Sindhi in its place of origin, in Pakistan also.

 Gulzar among Sahitya Akademi Award winners
Noted Urdu lyricist and author Gulzar, Tamil writer S Balasubramanian and Marathi playwright Mahesh Elkunchwar are among the 22 litterateurs selected for this year's Sahitya Akademi awards, which were announced in New Delhi on Saturday.
The executive board of the Akademi, which met under the chairmanship of its president Ramakant Rath, approved selection of 22 books, chosen on the basis of recommendations made by a jury of three members in the concerned languages, its secretary K Satchidananadan said in a release.
The winners of the Sahitya Akademi for translation are Prabhat Chandra Sarma [Assamese], Usha Ranjan Bhattacharya [Bengali], Neetha Kumar [English], Shakuntala Mehta [Gujarati], Krishan Mohan [Hindi], Veena Santeshwara [Kannada], Gokuldas Prabhu [Konkini], Prabodh Narayan Singh [Maithili] and Damodharan Kaliyath [Malayalam].
