Haile Selassie I was born Tafari Makonnen on July 23, 1892, in the village of Ejersa Goro, in the Harar province of Ethiopia, as Lij (literally "child", usually bestowed upon nobility).
He inherited his imperial blood through his paternal grandmother, Princess Tenagnework Sahle Selassie, who was an aunt of Emperor Menelik II, and as such, claimed to be a direct descendant of Makeda, the queen of Sheba, and King Solomon of ancient Israel.
Selassie's core beliefs of racial integration, a united Africa and the following of a moral path are at the heart of Rasta philosophy.

Sahle Selassie, great-great-grandson of Sebstyanos, eshewed the style of Meridazmatch and assumed the title of King of Shoa, after he succeeded his father in 1813.
Sahle Selassie's grandson, Menelik II, was taken hostage by Emperor Tewodros II soon after his accession as a minor in 1855.
The latter succeeded as Emperor Haile Selassie I in 1930.

Prince Sahle Selassie (1931 - April 24, 1962) was the youngest child of Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen Asfaw of Ethiopia.
Prince Sahle Selassie was married to Princess Mahisente Habte Mariam, the daughter of Dejazmach Hapte Mariam Gebre Igziabiher, the heir to the old Oromo kingdom of Leqa Naqamte in Welega Province, and later served as governor of Welega province.
Prince Sahle Selassie died in 1962, months after the death of his mother Empress Menen Asfaw, and was buried in the crypt of Holy Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa.

An Ethiopian royalist group, the 'Emperor Selassie I Foundation' had organized an official 'funeral' for the King of Kings to coincide with the Coronation celebrations and invited the Rasta community in general to participate.
Although lacking DNA evidence, news reports described the find as Selassie's bones, even though the skeleton was said to be obviously too tall to belong to the Emperor and there were reports of a gunshot wound in the skull of the bones.
Selassie, who was one of Africa's most charismatic leaders,s ruled Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974, is revered by many as a great African leader who resisted Italian colonialism and helped to found the Organization of African Unity.
