This site was established in the early 1900s by people from Saibai Island in Torres Strait where local islanders formed a community.
After Saibai Island was devastated by a tidal wave, Saibai Islanders, led by a man named Bamaga, moved to Muttee Heads on Cape York.
Emergency cases are assessed and patients are either helivaced to Thursday Island Hospital by Reef Helicopters or by RFDS.

Saibai Islanders have always traded with PNG, although their great enemies were traditionally the Kiwai of the Fly River.
After Saibai Island was devastated by a tidal wave, a group of Saibai Islanders, led by a man named Bamaga Ginau, eventually accepted Government assistance to resettle on Cape York.

The Mawa Mask, from Saibai Island, is 460 mm in height and is made from carved wood, painted, with eyes of nautilus shell with fibre added to it.
This print is credited to and for the seven clans of Saibai Island for their well maintained cultural beliefs, practices and performances of their traditional dances and customs that I always admired when I was growing up.
While seeing them performing their unique style of dancing during many festivals and traditional feastings, I was always overwhelmed by their technique, and wished that I was also from Saibai Island so I too would have the rights of performing and dressing in their warrior like dancing costumes.
