Said Bin Taimur (1910-1972) was the sultan of Muscat and Oman (the country later renamed to Oman) from 1932 to 1970.
The imam's revolt was suppressed in 1955 with the help of Great Britain, but this, in turn, earned Taimur the animosity of Saudi Arabia, which supported the imam, and of Egypt, which regarded British involvement in suppressing the revolt as inconducive to the cause of Arab nationalism.
Said lived at the Dorchester Hotel in London, seldom leaving his suite, till his death in 1972.

In 1932 he abdicated in favour of his eldest son Said bin Taimur.

This six-year period is of particular interest because of the coup d’état which saw the deposition of Sultan Said bin Taimur and the accession of his son Sultan Qabus bin Said.
Whereas under Sultan Said Britain was closely bound to Oman in areas of foreign and defence policy, under Sultan Qabus the country moved away from reliance on Britain, opening up to international influences and forging ahead with internal social policy.

The ribbon of the Sultan Said medal may be seen carrying a bronze (or silver?) khanjar device or a bronze palm leaf representing bravery in battle.
It is said that the sultan himself ruled out any "victory" medal, as that misrepresented the sort of national suffering which the war had reprewsneted and that what ought to be commemorated, instead, was Al-Sumood, or "Endurance".
This is said to be patterned on the civil head-dress cloth worn by the sultan.
