Sunset of the Samurai - Military Photos
Saigo was already on board a ship to Korea when the government reconsidered its agreement to his scheme and recalled him.
Saigo, with his small force, could hardly have wanted a fight, and if he had, he would not have warned Tani that he was on the way.
Forced to carry Saigo on a special litter, since he was suffering from a hydrocele, the little army managed to slip through the fog undetected, quietly dispatching the few guards who barred its path.

Things came to a head in January 1877 when Saigo led an army of 40,000 against the government stronghold in Kumamoto, in what came to be known as the Satsuma Rebellion.
On September 24, the imperial forces closed in and Saigo, severely wounded, asked one of his comrades to kill him.
His courage, idealism and heroic death earned Saigo enormous popular support - so much so that he was officially pardoned by imperial decree in 1891.

 Kagoshima, Kagoshima Summary
Kagoshima was bombarded by the British Royal Navy in 1863 to punish the Satsuma daimyo for the murder of Charles Richardson on the Tōkaidō highway the previous year, and the refusal to pay an indemnity in compensation.
Kagoshima was the birthplace and scene of the last stand of Saigo Takamori, a legendary figure in Meiji Japan in 1877 at the end of the Satsuma Rebellion (Seinan Senso).
Japan's industrial revolution may be said to have started here, stimulated by the young students commemorated in a large statue outside the city's main train station.

Saigo, with some reluctance and only after more widespread dissatisfaction with the Meiji reforms, raised a rebellion in 1877.
Although he was defeated and committed suicide, Saigo was not branded a traitor and became a heroic figure in Japanese history.

 Anime Pilgrimage D/R » Mushishi - episode 16
This issue is very similar to one that has surfaced in a recent anime about death, but Mushishi makes the point so much better I won’t shame the other series by naming it.
The difference is that here Saigo recognises the issue at hand and chooses not to be selfish about it.
The uncomfortable lesson to learn from this episode is that a disabled regularity is better than none at all; that people have to endeavour to make the most of what they have and accept that their lot in life can’t get any better but could certainly get a lot worse.

Two of the major figures of this group were Okubo Toshimichi (1832-78), son of a Satsuma retainer, and Satsuma samurai Saigo Takamori (1827-77), who had joined forces with Choshu, Tosa, and Hizen to overthrow the Tokugawa.
Okubo became minister of finance and Saigo a field marshal; both were imperial councillors.
Kido Koin (1833- 77), a native of Choshu, student of Yoshida Shoin, and coconspirator with Okubo and Saigo, became minister of education and chairman of the Governors' Conference and pushed for constitutional government.

This isn’t unexpected though — Miyazaki is a Kyuushu native, and you see Totoro murals and scenes from his other movies painted everywhere.
Notably, Kagoshima is the birthplace of Saigo Takamori, the “Last Samurai.” On May 12 (see post) I met his great-great-grandson, Saigo Takufumi, with members of the Sumiyoshi Rotary Club at an awesome dinner in Shinsaibaishi, Osaka.
Visiting the graves was a very surreal experience — the area is deep among bamboo trees, tinted green by moss that covers every surface and sunlight filtering through the leaves above, alternating between immense silence and the eerie buzzing of locusts, as statues of ryu no mamorigami, dragon-god sentinels, and thunder-gods stand guard.

It is finely acted, with a fiery and intelligent performance by Ken Watanabe, and a forceful counterpart in Kazunari Ninomiya; its charred and claustrophobic locales are beautifully, if darkly, photographed; the narrative is expertly and efficiently directed by Eastwood.
Its battle-scenes, though sporadic, are jolting both in their violence and intensity, with a mix of cinematic suspense, such as a brief moment where the young soldier Saigo must pick up a piss bucket he drops between rocks while Allied ships launch mortar shells around him.
The plot, likely well-reported by now, concentrates entirely on the Iwo Jima campaign from the eyes of those Japanese defeated on the island.
