The Hindu Business Line : On the trail of the elusive Florican
ON the up and down soft gradients of some 900 hectares of grassland in Sailana, the elusive (or is it scared) Lesser Florican flies in quietly for breeding in the early part of June and by October exits to none knows where.
The dance or the frequent vertical take offs of the male Lesser Florican (Sypheotides indica) or khar mor in Hindi, from a single grassy spot, to draw the attention of the female, is a free show and one had the first glimpse through binoculars on the noon of August 30.
Dinesh Kothari, his wife, son and myself entered the Sailana grounds in the morning with the skies donning a rain hat.

 Sanctuary Asia - Take Action
Not only is its grassland habitat under severe threat from changes in land-use patterns, but the use of pesticides in and around their breeding habitats also poses a long-term threat to its survival.
In this scenario, the recent move by the Madhya Pradesh government to denotify two well-known Lesser Florican breeding habitats in the Vindhyachal hills, the Sailana and Sardarpur Sanctuaries is not welcome.
The floricans of Sardarpur and Sailana are beneficial to farmers as they feed on insect pests that prey on crops.

The Hindu Business Line : Farmers and the Florican fight for survival
In Sardarpur and Sailana grasslands, villagers send their cattle to graze on government land at midnight while private lands have been put to the plough to grow maize, wheat, rice, cotton and tomatoes.
Lad did not blame the villagers as over the years a rise in population has split farm and grasslands, leaving little for the Lesser Florican, which by best estimates has become a threatened species.
As an alternative, Kishor suggested compensating the farmers placing under plough the grasslands on an annual basis, though that looks difficult as the funds may not come.
