Single-handed ocean yacht racing begain with the race across the Atlantic Ocean by William Albert Andrews and Josiah W. Lawlor in 1891; however, the first regular single-handed ocean race was the Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race, first held in 1960.
One such is the Three peaks yacht race in the UK which is a team competition involving sailing, cycling and running.
For most forms of yacht racing, one of two solutions to this problem are used; either all boats are required to be identical (a one-design class), or a handicapping system is used.

After the race we headed back in and the wind was very decent so we ended up just tying the skiff to Webejamming and towing it most of the way back to the marina and only used it to tow us into the marina and slip.
We again raced inside on the river and with a vicious current running against us on the windward tack we were limited to one side of the river.
After and early start the race committe decided to move fleets C and D from inside on te cape fear river to outside on the ocean to use the same course that the bigger boat fleets were using.

It is a wonderful book for the beginner trying to get past the confusion of being able to apply the rules while approaching a thicket of starboard tack boats without the benefit of painted lines marking the lanes, yield signs giving you a heads-up, and brakes to bail you out when your attention wanders.
The heart of this manual is Willis taking you around the race course in a separate chapter for each stage, from before the start, around the marks, and to post race protests.
The flip side lists some racing definitions, when to hail, how to file a protest, when and how to do penalty turns, etc. This summary is probably most useful for the novice sailor; or the more experienced sailor who doesn't race often and wants a quick refresher.
