Master Mariner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Royal Navy in the days of sail, "master" was often used as an abbreviation for the Sailing Master, the warrant officer responsible for the navigation and steering of the vessel.
The position of sailing master was later commissioned and renamed the Navigating Officer.
The Master's Mates were the assistants to the Sailing Master, also warrant officers, and were usually young men with family connections not quite good enough to become midshipmen who either aspired to become sailing masters themselves or to be commissioned as lieutenants, as often happened.

 Thunderhead to the Storm
Unfortunately as Michael was largely ignorant as to what a sailing master actually did, he couldn’t quite grasp all the little intricacies of the account that had been played back before him.
As hyper sailing is a bit of an art, preferences for controlling the sails, and for generating data can be different from one officer to the next.
Thus we’ve adapted a four corner method were we tie the fours sails together at their foot, that’s the point closest to the center of the ship, and along their walls, the segments that parallel the next sail over.

CAPTAIN H. Captain H.L. Savage, of Cleveland, master of the schooner Manda, was born in Belfast, Ireland, May 12, 1858, the son of William Savage, a cattle dealer, who lost his life on the English Channel by the wrecking of a vessel on which he had a large consignment of stock.
In 1893 he sailed in the same capacity on the steamer Russell Sage, of the Wabash line, and on the 3rd of August of that year he was transferred to the S. Reynolds, of the same line, on which he is still employed as mate.
Subsequently he was master of the Frank Perew, Emily P. Weed, Charles A. Eddy and R.J. Atchison, and in 1895 was made captain of the Penobscot, which was new at that time, and on which he is still serving to the entire satisfaction of the owners.

Maximum Crowe: Master and Commander / Far Side of the World: Capt. Andrew Reay-Ellers
ANDY REAY-ELLERS: We wound up using a term from the period in which the film is set: "Sailing Master." The sailing master was the officer on a ship whose duties included overseeing the handling and maintaining of the sails and rigging, and also the training of the crew.
My relationship with the sailing ship Rose and her captain, Richard Bailey, goes back to 1989 when I was captain of another replica warship and we would stage mock sea battles for harbor festivals and promotional events.
Maintaining this continuity was especially important since the sailing footage you’ll see of the Surprise is made up of a combination of shots of the Rose, the mock ship in the tank, the miniature ship, and the CGI [computer generated image] work.
