  Sailing - MSN Encarta
Sailing, propulsion of a boat or ship by means of the driving force of the wind through the use of sails.
As shown in the first diagram in Figure 1, the sail or sails are set at approximately a 90° angle to the longitudinal axis of the boat, with power derived from the push of the wind on the sails’ back surfaces.
A vessel is said to be on the starboard tack when sailing so that the wind is blowing from the right or starboard side, and to be on the port tack when the wind is blowing from the left or port side.

Sailing vessels cannot sail directly into the wind and those that point up towards the wind will eventually lose their way (headway is forward motion of the vessel regardless of wind; leeway is sideways motion of the vessel away from the wind).
Once a vessel that is out on one tack, becomes beam-on to her windward destination (her sides are at right angles to her intended destination), she can tack through the wind at ninety degrees to point directly at her destination.
When sailing vessels on the same tack pass each other or are in close proximity to each other, it is the duty of the weather side vessel (the boat nearest the wind) to change course away from the leeward vessel.
