  Vintage Sailplane Association
The purpose of the Vintage Sailplane Association (VSA) is to promote the acquision, restoration and flying of vintage sailplanes by its members, and to assist the National Soaring Museum in the preservation of soaring history and the promotion of vintage sailplane activity.
A Vintage Sailplane is any glider out of production since 1958, or a more recently built glider with appearance, performance and construction characteristics similar or comparable to gliders manufactured before 1958.
A Classic Sailplane is a glider that is at least 25 years old, but is not categorized as a Vintage Sailplane.

The oldest sailplanes that are still in use today are from the 60s, such as the trusty old two-seater Bergfalke.
he cockpit of a modern sailplane is not all that different from the cockpit of any other aircraft, except for the lack of throttle and engine instruments of course.
To fly within the optimum envelope of the sailplane is much more comfortable and nice than when the plane is sliding around in the sky like a piece of butter in a hot frying pan.

 R/C Sailplanes
Sailplanes don't have or need engines to keep them flying, although many use electric motors or gas engines powering propellers to 'tow' the sailplanes to a decent altitude.
Some sailplanes can be launched merely by throwing to get altitude, known to the 'purest' as Hand Launch Gliders or HLG, or by using a towing mechanism from the ground such as a long rubber band known as a hi-start or with an electric winch.
To get the sailplane to a high altitude means attaching your sailplane the line end of the hi-start with a ring on the hi-start and 'tow hook' on the bottom of the plane (near the plane's center of gravity) and staking the rubber end into the ground.

 Aeros AL-12 Ultralight Sailplane
Currently among the proponents of soaring flight there is more and more discussion of the idea of a sailplane that could have some of the positive features of hang gliders and rigid wing gliders.
The possibility of soaring flight while using narrow thermals and "microlift", to takeoff from hang gliding sites, and to have the simplicity of quick rigging and ease of transportation as well as low cost of the aircraft is something that many soaring pilots have stated a desire for.
At the same time it is desirable for this aircraft to have great aerodynamic performance - especially with it's glide ratio, wonderful controllability, good stall and spin characteristics, as well as provide for a higher comfort during flight, which should enable longer soaring flights without tiring as quickly.

 SAILPLANE MODIFICATIONS
In the high speed region, especially on the flapped sailplane, the flow on the forward half of the upper and lower surface of the wing should be laminar and on the fuselage up the region of the wing the flow should be laminar.
The equipment you need to determine what part of your sailplane is laminar consists of 1/16th inch diameter plastic tubing that you get from your hobby shop and a stethoscope.
Separations occur principally in a region where the geometry of the sailplane changes too abruptly and the boundary layer leaves the surface.

I've been flying R/C sailplanes for about 18 years, and what success I have had is strongly related to what I have learned about properly setting up a sailplane.

Sailplanes are always descending relative to the air in which they are flying.
The wing on your sailplane is shaped and tilted so the air moving over it moves faster than the air moving under it.
