  St. Afra
Afra was given over as a prostitute to the service of the goddess by her own mother Hilaria, or Hilara.
To the same narrative clearly belongs the conclusion of the story of Afra's martyrdom, in which mention is made of the mother and three handmaidens of Afra (Digna, Eunomia or Eumenia, and Eutropia or Euprepia), who, after the remains of the martyr were placed in the tomb, themselves suffered martyrdom by fire.
In this narrative Afra alone is mentioned, and there is no trace of those exaggerations and fantastic embellishments which characterize the later legends of the martyrs.

According to the acts of the martyrdom of Saint Afra, who with her handmaids suffered at the stake for Christ, there existed in Augsburg, early in the fourth century, a Christian community under Bishop Narcissus; Saint Dionysius, uncle of Saint Afra, is mentioned as his Successor.
The See of Augsburg reached the period of its greatest splendor under Saint Ulrich (923-973); he raised the standard of training and discipline among the clergy by the reformation of existing schools and the establishment of new ones, and by canonical visitations and synods; he provided for the poor, and rebuilt decayed churches and monasteries.
Thus the Poor School Sisters have charge of the studies in 19 schools, the Franciscans in 35, the Dominican nuns in 11, the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Ursberg in 3; the English Ladies are excellent teachers for the higher education of women, and conduct 11 institutes for girls.

Saint Drithelm was a married and pious layman who nearly died in an epidemic in 696.
What happened was that while Saint Drithelm was sick, he had a near death experience in which “a man with a shining countenance and bright garment” led him to Purgatory, Hell, and to the very gates of Heaven.
One of Saint Drithelm’s favorite pastimes was to break the ice on the frozen river Tweed and then try to stay underwater for the length of time that it would take to recite a prayer or a psalm.
