Saint Anthony Falls - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saint Anthony Falls, or the Falls of Saint Anthony, located near downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, was the only waterfall on the Mississippi River until it was replaced by a concrete apron after they partially collapsed in 1869 and, later, a series of dams in the 1950s and 1960s.
In the late 19th century, the falls were in danger of collapse due to the weakness of the underlying structure.
Anthony Falls was the upper limit of commercial navigation on the Mississippi until two dams and a series of locks were built between 1948 and 1963 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

Anthony was born in the year 1195 A. at Lisbon (Portugal) where his father was a captain in the royal army.
Anthony began to speak in a very reserved manner; but soon holy animation seized him, and he spoke with such eloquence, learning and unction that everybody was fairly amazed.
At the request of the brethren, St. Anthony was later commissioned also to teach theology, “but in such a manner,” St. Francis distinctly wrote, “ that the spirit of prayer be not extinguished either in yourself or in the other brethren.” St. Anthony himself placed greater value in the salvation of souls than on learning.
