		Louisiana Tech University, which has responsibility for providing parish population estimates to the State Treasurer’s office, estimated the population of St. Bernard Parish in July 2005 at 67,419.
		In the parish the population was spread out with 25.20% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 29.20% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who were 65 years of age or older.

		He went on to serve successfully as an engineer under General Winfield Scott during the Mexican War where he served with distinction and was brevetted major.
