Saint Croix Island, Maine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saint Croix Island, or Dochet Island as it is called today, is a small uninhabited island in Maine near the mouth of the Saint Croix River that forms part of the International Boundary separating Maine from New Brunswick.
The island is significant as the site of an early attempt at French colonization of the Americas.
During a boundary dispute between Britain and the U.S. in 1797, the island was deemed to be under U.S. sovereignty by a survey of the river which determined it to be on the western side of the main river channel.

Habitation at Port-Royal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The island, named Île-Saint-Croix in the Riviére-St-Croix (which drains into Passamaquoddy Bay), became a deathtrap in the winter of 1604-1605 as the settlers succumbed to scurvy and diseases brought on by malnutrition and the cold.
Due to the island's small size, the meagre wood supply was quickly depleted and isolation on the island in the river kept settlers away from area wildlife, or assistance from the nearby Passamaquoddy Nation.
Today, this replica serves as the cornerstone of Port-Royal National Historic Site of Canada, and coupled with the nearby Fort Anne National Historic Site of Canada in Annapolis Royal, continues to commemorate this important historic region for Canadians and visitors.
