Saint David's Day (Welsh: Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Sant) is the feast day of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, and falls on March 1 each year.
In 2006 Saint David's Day was officially celebrated on 28 February by Roman Catholics and on 2 March by the Anglican Church in Wales as saints' days are not celebrated on Ash Wednesday, which is a day of penitence ([1], [2]).
A poll conducted for Saint David's Day in 2006 found that 87% of the Welsh wanted March 1st to be a bank holiday, with 65% prepared to sacrifice a different bank holiday to ensure this.

Saint David was born about 454-520CE and died about 560-601 (some sources give the year as March 1st, 589CE).
David went on to many missionary works and founding of monasteries, including his well known Mynyw/Menevia of southwestern Wales which was noted for severe asceticism (harshness and severity of self discipline) based in Egyptian monk practices.
It could be that herein lies the real use David may have had for leeks, as their harsh life-style certainly could have benefited from some healing agent for their hands which would have suffered from their labors.

Little is really known about Dewi or St David (6th Century), and we must rely for our information on a biography written five hundred years after his death by Rhygyfarch (1056?-99) of Llanbadarn Fawr.
St David's Bishop's palace was a grand and richly decrorated building, much of which is still in evidence from the ruins found today.
This spectacular palace was begun in the early 13th century, and in 1326 it became the favourite dwelling place of the Bishop of St David's.
