In that village stands the remnant of a castle named "Tours de Merle", which is french for The de Merle Towers.
It would seem there were many branches of the de Merle family; some of which were the Pesteils and de Noailles.
The de Merle tower was, I think, built by one Hugh De Merle.

This imposing 13 and 15C citadel overlooks Merle's medieval ecosite, devoted to the re-creation of peasant farmers' and nobility's daily life in the 14 and 15C.
The citadel includes several forts, towers and castles put up as the lords followed one another, such as the château de Fulcon de Merle (13C), that of Hughes de Merle (14C) or that of the lords of Vayrac (12 and 13C).

Les Tours de Merle is an interesting ensemble of medieval ruins with a long history of feudal interaction with the local powers-that-be and the English during the two hundred years when most of France was part of the English realm.
From the towers we drove down the Morrone Valley to Argentat, which is not particularly memorable, and on through Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne to a delightfully located logi run by a family of famous chefs at Pt.
We also enjoyed another energetic day walking part of the Saint Sozy circuit from a lookout at the end of a road on the top of cliffs overlooking the river.
