Lives of the Saints, November 3, Saint Martin de Porres, Saint Hubert
Saint Lambert desired that he make a pilgrimage in his name to the tombs of the Apostles in Rome, and Saint Hubert obeyed; while he was there his bishop was martyred, and he himself was miraculously designated to the Pope as his successor.
Saint Hubert died after dedicating a church, despite his advanced age, at the request of his flock; he was seized by a fever which became violent.
Saint Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru in 1579, during the days when Spanish noblemen and many adventurers were still in the land, fascinated by the lure of the gold and silver which abounded there.

 Miscellaneous: Saint Hubert's Stag
"Seek out Bishop Lambert of Maastricht," came the reply, "and he will tell you." St. Hubert has since then been the patron saint of hunting, which isn't as ironic as it sounds, because Hubert was reprimanded by Bambi for skipping church, not for hunting.
From the stag a voice spoke forth, "Unless you turn to the Lord, Hubert, you shall fall into Hell." Dropping to his knees, the hunter asked what he must do to be saved.
The strange imagery of this event fascinates me. As a wild and frivolous young man, Hubert was a passionate hunter.

 Cynology in Belgium
The St. Hubert hounds were originally bred, in the 7th century, by the monk François Hubert, who later became bishop and was canonised as St. Hubert, the patron saint of hunters.
Above all, it has to be mentioned that the name St. Hubert has been given to the leading organisms in Belgium (the ‘Society’ and the ‘Union’) and that a St. Hubert Hound head, which figures on Belgian pedigrees, is the best indication that the pedigree is ‘official’.
This Union consists of the ‘Assembly of Delegates’ and the ‘Royal Society St. Hubert’, both of which are represented in the ‘Cynological Council’.

Quebec was almost entirely destroyed by fire in 1845.
His classical course was made in Quebec; after taking in France the degree of licentiate in letters, he was professor of rhetoric and prefect of studies in the Quebec seminary, became pastor of the Canadians at Hartford, Conn., and in 1901 was first parish priest of Jacques-Cartier in Quebec.
The first parish erected was that of Quebec (1664) which, suppressed by the Bull of erection of the diocese, was reestablished by the bishop in 1684 and united to the seminary; he also instituted a chapter.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Saint Hugh of Lincoln
The saint journeyed to Normandy, met Richard at Chateau-Gaillard and, having won the monarch's forgiveness and admiration by his extraordinary courage, proceeded to rebuke him fearlessly for his faults — his infidelity to his wife, and encroachments on the Church's rights.
Hugh's emblem is a white swan, in reference to the beautiful story of the swan of Stowe which contracted a deep and lasting friendship for the saint, even guarding him while he slept.
The saint was fearless in reproving Henry's faults, especially his violation of the rights of the Church.
