Prince Ilia Chavchavadze, known as Saint Ilia the Righteous, (October 27, 1837 – August 30, 1907) was a prominent figure of new Georgian literature, famous public benefactor, jurist, leader of the Georgia's National-liberation movement in 1861-1907.
From 1863 Ilia Chavchavadze was founder and editor-in-chief of Georgian public and political periodicals "Sakartvelos Moambe" (1863-1877) and "Iveria" (1877-1905).
On August 30, 1907 Ilia Chavchavadze was assassinated by Georgian social-democrats; in 1987 he was canonized by the Georgian Orthodox and Apostolic Church.

He co-founded the Initiative Group for the Defence of Human Rights in 1973, became the first Georgian member of Amnesty International in 1974 and co-founded the Georgian Helsinki Group in 1976 (renamed the Georgian Helsinki Union in 1989).
In 1988, Gamsakurdia became one of the founders of the Society of Saint Ilia the Righteous (SSIR), a combination of a religious society and a political party which became the basis for his own political movement.
Although Georgia's poor human rights record was strongly criticised by the international community, Shevardnadze's personal prestige appears to have convinced them to swallow their doubts and grant the country formal recognition.
