Irene (empress) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Originally a poor but beautiful Athenian orphan, she speedily gained the love and confidence of her feeble husband, and at his death in 780 was left by him sole guardian of the empire and of their ten-year-old son Constantine VI.
Her most notable act was the restoration of the orthodox veneration of icons or images, a policy which she always had secretly favoured, though compelled to abjure it in her husband's lifetime.
A hollow semblance of friendship was maintained between Constantine and Irene, whose title of empress was confirmed in 792 ; but the rival factions remained, and Irene, by skillful intrigues with the bishops and courtiers, organized a powerful conspiracy on her own behalf.

Saint Irene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saint Irene ("Holy Peace") was the sister of Saint Agape ("Holy Love") and Saint Chionia ("Snow-White"), three young girls of Thessalonica.
The provincial governor, Dulcitius, sent her to a bordello, but when she remained unmolested though exposed naked and chained, she was put to death, some accounts say by being burned to death like her sisters, others saying that she died with an arrow piercing her throat.
Irene is venerated more in the Eastern Orthodox Church than in Roman Catholicism, where she has not made the canon and doesn't rate an entry in the Catholic Encyclopedia.

The Life Of Saint Irene Chrysovalantou
Irene in no way used this knowledge to reprimand or humiliate people but corrected their confessions in such a way that they understood she had certain supernatural powers.
Irene then awoke with the message, “Return to your convent and within three days your novice will be healed.” So she disclosed her vision to the others and they all departed in great joy, arriving home just in time for Friday Vespers.
All this the saint does to the continual frustration of the powers of darkness and to the eternal glory of the all merciful Lord to Whom alone is due all honor might, majesty, dominion and power, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.

Because of her great beauty and virtue, she was brought to Constantinople as a prospective bride for the young Emperor Michael (842-867); however, as Saint Joannicius the Great foretold, it was God's will that she assume the monastic habit instead.
She shone forth in great ascetical labours, and suffered many attacks from the demons; while yet a novice, she attained to the practice of Saint Arsenius the Great, of praying the whole night long with arms stretched out towards Heaven (see May 8).
