The county is named for the Saint Lawrence River, which in turn was named for the Catholic saint on whose birthday the river was discovered.
Lawrence County is the largest county in New York based on area (New York County is the smallest).
The eastern boundary of Tryon County was approximately five miles west of the present city of Schenectady, and the county included the western part of the Adirondack Mountains and the area west of the West Branch of the Delaware River.

In a survey made in 1892, there are forty-seven suitable places for the erection of dams in the County, ranging from six to 164 feet in height, with an average of eighteen feet.
A north and south line was projected in 1852 from the New York Central, at Rome, to Cape Vincent on the St. Lawrence, to which a branch to Ogdensburg was built in 1862.
