I am Director of Animal Health and Conservation for the Saint Louis Zoological Park and a member of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association's Board of Directors.
This is problematic when the pet owners abandon their animals at accredited zoos which are unable to introduce them into their legal breeding programs due to a lack of genetic background information as well as other constraints.
An unfortunately typical case occurred in 1995 at the Saint Louis Zoological Park, when I was called in the middle of the night to retrieve a lion cub that was abandoned and tied to the Zoo's gate.

Louis LeBlanc was found in a Louisiana Bayou and is on loan to the St. Louis Zoo until November 30, when he gets shipped back to the Audobon Zoo in Louisiana.
If Louis were out in the Bayou with his brothers, he wouldn't live long at all.

PETA is also forwarding a letter from a whistleblower about the incident, which alleges that, despite news reports that the tragedy was caused by zoo visitors, the zoo itself is responsible for the polar bear’s death.
In zoos, polar bears are usually confined to spaces that are literally a millionth the size of their minimum home range in the wild.
