Martial was born in the Orient; he was sent forth by a Roman Pontiff to evangelise our region, probably at the end of the third century.
Martial was attended by the oriental priests, Alpinien and Austriclinien.
Martial's companions were to outlive him and be buried with him in a basilica-crypt built on the site of a former Gallo-Roman graveyard located outside the City, as was then the custom.

Saint Martial - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saint Martial is depicted on the coat-of-arms of the city of Limoges
Saint Martial was the first bishop of Limoges in today's France, according to a life of Saturnin, first bishop of Toulouse, which Gregory of Tours quotes in his History of the Franks.
Martial was buried outside the Roman town, and as his tomb became progressively more important as a pilgrimage site, the monks found patronage in the Benedictine order in the 9th century.

 St. Martial
Martial seems to have been accompanied by two priests brought by him from the Orient, so he himself may have been born in that region.
For a long time however it has been exposed to well-warranted discussion that St. Martial's biography is linked with the great question of the apostolicity of certain Churches of Gaul.
As to what concerns St. Martial, it has been clearly proved that we must honour in him not one of the seventy-two disciples of Christ but the first preacher of the Christian faith in the Province of Limoges, and that we should not go beyond this.

Lives of the Saints, December 18, Saint Gatian
Saint Gatian, a disciple of the Apostles and the first bishop of Tours, was sent to that city at the same time as Saint Denys to Paris, Saint Trophimus to Arles, Saint Martial to Limoges, Saint Saturninus to Toulouse, Saint Sergius Paulus to Narbonne, and Saint Austremoine into Auvergne.
The Saint was often interrupted in his instructions by harassers, and when denounced to the magistrates, was mistreated and threatened with death; but no contradictions or sufferings were able to discourage or daunt this apostle.
Saint Gatian established outside the city, a cemetery for the burial of Christians.

Faced with the mounting despair and suffering of his folk, Hilduin bishop of Limoges since 990, in agreement with Géoffroy, the Abbot of Saint-Martial's, convened all the bishops of Aquitaine to concelebrate a Mass of intercession.
Second, the Bishops, pledging themselves socially in favour of peace and the defence of the weakest, remained loyal to their sacred mission, particularly as they, themselves, were the offsprings of the feudal system.
Martial's stone coffin is probably the one lying further to the right, according to Tève-le-Duc, a chronicler whose name was not mentioned until the end of the first millenium.Whatever the case, there are enough grounds for placing the saint's tomb in the vault discovered during the archeological digs.

Stain Martial's body, first bishop of Limoges, was buried in a necropolis located outside the agglomeration, according to the tradition.
Soon, Saint Martial's tomb became the place of an important devotion and progressively gave birth to a pilgrimage and, in the 9th century, to the Benedictin abbey of Saint-Martial, glory of Limoges and of the Limousin region.
This abbey was razed in the 19th century and only a few manuscripts from its outstanding library have remained along with the archaeological crypt which was converted between 1966 and 1970 and still shelters the tombs of Saint Martial and of his fellows Alpinien and Austriclinien.

In fact, Odalric's scriptorium was energetically pushing the new legends about their patron saint -- fanciful but powerfully attractive stories supposedly from the pen of his first disciple Aurelian, about Martial's Jewish origins, his companionship with the historical Jesus, the enthusiasm he inspired in the people of Aquitaine.
Martial was God's chosen channel for the salvation of Aquitaine on earth as in heaven.
In fact, Ademar's conversion to Martial's cult came with a specific revelation: since Martial had accompanied Jesus, had been present at the Last Supper, had wit- nessed the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentacost, he was an apostle.

Ademar of Chabannes on John the Baptist
No one had ever seen such rejoicing and glory as in that concourse of monks and canons who hurried from every quarter-singing psalms and bearing the relics of saints-for the memory of the saintly herald.
Among the relics were those of that great prince who was father of the Aquitainians and the original orator of the Gauls, namely the blessed apostle Martial, carried along with relics of St. Stephen from the cathedral of Limoges.
When the relics of St. Martial were thus brought forth from their own basilica in a reliquary of gold and gems, suddenly the entire Aquitaine, which had long labored under huge downpours, praised the serenity which returned with the advent of its father.
