With no resident pastor, the parish was variously cared for by the Benedictine Fathers of Chicago, the priests of St. Joseph's in Lockport, the Benedictine Fathers from Blue Island, and the Jesuits of Ignatius College, Roosevelt Road in Chicago.
In 1973, a portion of the southeast corner of the parish was disconnected to become part of the newly formed St. Julie Billiart Parish in Tinley Park.
This committee was to prayerfully study the needs of the parish and its development of lay ministry, and to arrive at a model of structure for St. Michael's.

 Saint Michael Church
The history of St. Michael's Church begins in Germany with Father Peter Dickopf sent as a missionary to Northern Wisconsin and was the first priest to celebrate Mass in Jump River, then still known as Broederville, at Michael Dietzler's farm on Sunday, June 4, 1908.
Michael's dishes, three tables, etc. were donated with the privilege that the church members could use them when needed for weddings, graduations, etc. then returned to the Center in good condition.
February 5, 2005 St. Michael's was represented by Cindy Piotrowski at the re-dedication of the Cathedral of Christ the King at Superior.

The movement to establish the parish began in 1845, when 14 German immigrant families, longing for an opportunity to worship in their native tongue, purchased the former home of Monroe's first mayor.

During the time the Capuchin Fathers cared for St. Michael, a survey of church property and platting was conducted on August 26, 1901 with plans to purchase property on which to build a new church.
With a favorable reply from the Bishop and the kind cooperation of his parishioners, the spacious St. Michael Convent was built in 1925, and in the Fall of 1926 the Sisters of St. Joseph settled into the new convent.
Father Stehno carried on faithfully and competently with the spiritual needs of the three parishes until September 1959 when the Precious Blood Fathers of Carthagena, Ohio were appointed to assume the priestly and temporal duties of St. Michael Parish, Collyer, Christ The King Parish, WaKeeney, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Hill City.

 Saint Michael The Archangel, Parish History
The Saint Michael story began in the later 1800’s when Schererville was mostly farmland and rolling prairie.
By 1920, the St. Michael Community had grown to approximately 400 parishioners and Monsignor Berg, recognizing that the 50 year old church building was becoming too small to meet the needs of the parishioners, began plans for the new church.
By the time of our 100th anniversary, St. Michael parish had grown to 734 families and had a school enrollment of approximately 400 students.
