Paisley grew from a small village on the west bank of the River White Cart in the early middle ages to a Royal Burgh in 1488 and one of Scotland's most important towns by the nineteenth century.
Its early name, Passelat, might come from the Latin word, basilicum, meaning a church, since the town had a chapel founded by its patron saint, St Mirin, from the sixth century.
The people of Paisley have traditionally been known as 'buddies', a corruption of the word, body, and called their football team, one of the first in Scotland, St Mirren.
