After the first depot was destroyed by fire, and to serve the new Saint Paul based Great Northern Railroad which stretched from Chicago to Seattle, Union Depot was completed in 1917.
The depot is located in Lowertown, primarily the eastern part of downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Before the advent of railroads, riverboats were Saint Paul’s and Minnesota Territory’s primary connection to the rest of the nation.

The Saint Paul Union Depot (sometimes referred to as SPUD) was the main train station in the city of Saint Paul, Minnesota until passenger rail service in the region was restructured in the 1960s and 1970s, with Amtrak taking over most passenger service in the United States.
The entrance to Union Depot is considered a somewhat severe example of neoclassical architecture, with a number of tall columns in front.
The former depot still exists, with a number of businesses using portions of the front area and the United States Postal Service using the rear train concourse as a staging area for semi-trailer trucks serving the neighboring post office.

 Saint Paul, Nebraska Depot
The Union Pacific bought out the Republican Valley Railway soon after the railroad line was completed to Saint Libory and completed the line to St. Paul in 1880 and to Ord in 1881.
The original depot was built by the Union Pacific in 1880 and used until 1913, when the last, larger depot was built due to the city's expansion.
According to CBandQ records for 1926, the St. Paul depot was built in 1901 to dimensions of 24X66 feet.

The current Union Depot was finished in 1923, with its ten doric columns and an interior of Kasota dolomite, Tennessee and Missouri marble, and concrete.

 SPUD Concourse Open to the public
At the entrance to the concourse depot employees were taking down the all the train names and numbers from the arrival and departures board.
BN used the depot tracks to store surplus passenger cars, and the only time the depot was open was on Thursday evenings when the Twin City Model RR Club's layout was open.
After being vacant for over a decade, the depot headhouse building was finally redeveloped and reopened with restaurants and offices in the early 1980s.

According to Mike Nielsen, elevator manager as of July 1979, the depot was gutted inside, with all partitions removed to make the building one large room for the storage it is used for.

H.Weldon McGee, president of the Green Bay and Western in 1970 states, 'The original freight depot was built by the GBandM RR in 1884 and was rebuilt by the Omaha at joint expense by both carriers in 1885 after the original had burned.
