The flag of Cornwall is actually the the flag of St. Piran but it has been adopted as the Cornish National flag as St. Piran is the Patron Saint of Cornwall.
Piran "rediscovered" tin-smelting by accident when the fl hearthstone he was using happened to contain tin-bearing ore. The molten tin smelted out of the stone in the heat of the hearth and rose to the top in the form of a white cross.
One of the oldest crosses in Cornwall is the St. PiranCross which stands in the sandhills of Perranporth near the ruins of St Pirans Oratory.

Although the sea was treacherous Piran survived, the stormy seas calming as he floated on the millstone until he reached the shores of Cornwall.
Piran is perhaps most famous for his accidental discovery of tin, when a flstone on his fireplace got so hot that a white liquid leaked out; the first tin smelting.
It was this discovery that also formed the basis of the Cornish flag, the white hot tin on the fl of the ore. The Cornish flag is now used universally as a symbol of Cornish identity, from stickers on cars through to corporate organisations using the flag to identify 'Cornishness' to a global audience.

St.Piran (pronounced pi- as in pip and ren- as in wren) is the patron saint of Kernow (Cornwall).
Originally from Eire he arrived on our shores in the 6th century and was said to have discovered tin although us Kernewek (Cornish) had been mining it long before then.
His flag, the white cross on a fl background is the Baner Kernewek, the Cornish national flag which the English don't recognise and refuse to have it flown anywhere apart from public buildings and on St.Pirans day.
