FIRST THINGS: A Journal of Religion, Culture, and Public Life
Christian tradition quickly gave Pilate’s wife a name, Claudia Procula, and an aristocratic provenance, so that her parvenu husband was viewed as having married up, with all the tensions and awkward marital balance of power that such a situation entails.
As the centuries passed, the folklore of Christians who were as fascinated as we are by the Pilates embroidered their marriage with rich detail.
In the mystery plays of the medieval West, Procula became a sumptuously attired layabout who spent most of her waking hours in the bed where she had her famous dream.

There Saint Severinus had established after his wonted fashion a cell for a few monks, because he himself not infrequently came thither at the request of the citizens; particularly on 68 account of the constant incursions of the Alamanni, whose king, Gibuldus, greatly honored and loved him.
Saint Severinus uttered this warning: "Though all wrought by mortals' toil passeth away, yet most swiftly must these buildings above others be abandoned." And he said that they ought to make no effort for relics of the saints, because the blessing of Saint John would be brought to them without their asking.

I think that when the Church canonized their Saint Procula (who is supposed to be the unnamed individual mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew who was married to Pontius Pilate and who tried to dissuade him from crucifying Jesus), the Church "filled in" the details regarding Procula's origin.
There don't seem to be any historical sources to back up the claims that Claudia Procula was (as one version of the story goes) the illegitimate daughter of Augustus' own daughter Julia, and later adopted by Tiberius upon his marriage to Julia.
Perpetuating the myth of Claudia Procula is the 2006 novel titled Pilate's Wife, written by Antoinette May (famous -- or infamous, if you prefer -- for being the biographer of Sylvia Browne).
