Saint Evthymii, quite up in age, was troubled in soul that the actions of Shemyaka might cast a pall over his relations with the church primate he so deeply revered, and he dispatched a letter to Saint Jona.
Highly revering the saint, the monks of the Vyazhitsk monastery in gratitude erected a church in honour of Saint Evthymii, which was noted in the census of 1500.

Sophia Cathedral - one of the most ancient Russian stone constructions - was founded by prince Yaroslav the Wise, his son Vladimir and the archbishop Luka, as a public place of worship.
This explains the fact that the church was dedicated to Sophia, meaning the Lord's Wisdom, the immensity of its size, and also the use of its southern gallery as a burial place of outstanding Novgorod citizens such as princes, archbishops and posadniks.
A well-known saying went "Where there is St. Sophia, there is Novgorod." Such an attitude received further development in the beginning of the 15th century when the central dome was gilded, and a leaden pigeon, personifying the Sacred Spirit, was fixed on the central cross.

Scholars interpret the dedication of Novgorod’s cathedral to St. Sophia (as also occurred with the great cathedrals in Kiev and Polotsk) as a continuation of a cult of the Great Goddess that was widely practiced in these regions since archaic times.
During the Soviet period and the German occupation of 1941-44, the city of Novgorod was severely damaged and the cathedral was pillaged, bombed and left to deteriorate.
