There is a tradition in the Church of Antwerp that, on her way to Germany, Walburga made some stay there; and in that city's most ancient church, which now bears the title of St. Walburga, there is pointed out a grotto in which she was wont to pray.
Portions of St. Walburga's relics have been taken to Cologne, Antwerp, Furnes, and elsewhere, whilst her oil has been carried to all quarters of the globe.
The various translations of St. Walburga's relics have led to a diversity of feasts in her honour.

Walburga, born in Devonshire and educated at Wimborne Abbey in Dorset and was highly skilled in medicine.
One of those influenced by Saint Boniface was Saint Walburga; she and her brother Winebald both answered the mission call to help convert the Germans in the 8th Century.
Also of note was the fact that Saint Walburga's body was transferred from its original burial location to Eichstätt on a day of the calendar that was reserved for a local pagan feast.

Beginning in 748, she evangelized and healed pagans in what is now Germany with Saint Lioba, Saint Boniface, and her brothers, a mission that was very successful.
The night of 1 May, the date of the translation of Walburga's relics to Eichstätt in 870, is known as Walpurgisnacht; it is also a pagan festival marking the beginning of summer and the revels of witches.
It is possible that the protection of crops ascribed to her, represented by three ears of corn in her icons, may have been transferred to her from Mother Earth and the connection to this pagan holiday.

This is an old pagan festival, which borrowed its name from Saint Walburga whose feast occurs on May Day.
On this night witches are believed to ride on broomsticks and he-goats to places of old pagan sacrifices in the Harz Mountains, especially to Brocken, the highest point in the mountains.
