Among the patron saints of brewers, four are extremely well known: Augustine of Hippo, Luke the Apostle, Nicholas of Myra (also known as Saint Nicholas, or Santa Claus) and the Good King Wenceslas, the latter two also providing a linkage to the winter season of merriment.
Saint Luke (first century) is widely regarded as a patron saint of brewers although there is no obvious reason.
There also was King Wenceslas II in the 13th century, who convinced the Pope to revoke an order banning the brewing of beer, again endearing the Wenceslas name to local brewers.

Wenceslas was born around 907 in the castle of Stochov near Prague.
The castle is gone now, but there is still an oak tree there that was reputedly planted when Wenceslas was born and watered by his nannies with his bath water, which supposedly made the tree strong.
He was known for his kindness to the poor, as depicted in later verses of the famous carol 'Good King Wenceslas'.

Wencelas was raised a Christian by his grandmother St. Ludmila, but his ambitious mother, Drahomíra (Dragomir), a pagan, had her murdered and acted as regent herself, until Wenceslas came of age in 924 or 925.
