 Angelus: Abbey of Saint-Savin-sur Gartempe
After Germigny-des-Prés, the oldest church still standing in France, renowned for its in comparable Byzantine mosaics, was built the Abbey of Saint-Savin-sur Gartempe (pronounced: san-sa-van-sir gar-tawmp), which can boast of having the largest Romanesque frescoes of Europe.
In the days of Charlemagne, on that very location, the bodies of two martyrs, Savin and Cyprian, persecuted in the fifth century, were discovered under miraculous circumstances by Baidilius, Abbot of Marmoutier.
Because the abbey was sheltered by the castle, it escaped pillage from the Viking raids.
